RACE COURSE
Race course design is in progress. The course described below is tentative. Check back periodically for updates or sign up for our mail list.
SWIM: View Map > The swim course is two 1900m loops. The start is on the beach directly behind Yalong Bay Monument. The course is a rectangle with 1 meter high buoys at the turns. Swimmers will keep all buoys (except the loop-finish gate buoy) on their left. At the end of the first loop there is a short beach run before swimmers enter the water for the second loop. After completing the second loop, swimmers will run through the swim finish arch and up a flight of wooden stairs to the transition area.
Expected swim conditions: Warm, flat water. While the swim course is in the open South China Sea, it is mostly sheltered from swells and surf by Boar Island and a break wall connecting Boar Island and smaller outer islands. In the unlikely event of storms or other rough water conditions, the swim course will be shifted by a few hundred meters down the beach to take full advantage of the break wall and island shelter.
BIKE: View Map >
The bike course is two-loops.
Bike Course Snap Shot: In the absence of unfavorable winds, the bike course should be extremely fast. There are only four turns on the loop and only one significant climb. The East Expressway is a ribbon of new tarmac with gentle climbs and descents. On the Expressway riders will enter a tunnel that is several hundred meters long and should be careful to allow their eyes to adjust to the light entering and exiting the tunnel. The road surface in the tunnel is good, but riders must be aware of water hazards in the tunnel if it has recently rained. The pavement on the 223 Expressway is mostly excellent. Along this road riders will need to keep their heads up for water buffalos and other farm animals. The kilometers through Hartsangwan and Linwang villages will feature huge crowds and local color. The urban sections of the course (Yalong Bay, Yingbin and Phoenix roads) are on wide, new roads.
RUN : View Map >
Runners will exit the transition area from the Miss World facility’s front driveway, cross Xinfeng Road and turn right on Phoenix Road. The run course then jogs right onto the Phoenix Road park walkway. Runners will wind through the park paralleling Phoenix Road and cross a small pedestrian bridge. At the far end of the park, the course crosses over the Linchun River on a large (blue) pedestrian bridge. At the exit of the bridge, the course proceeds straight across Linchun River Road on a small commercial road to the large (brown) pedestrian bridge across the Sanya River. Exiting the Sanya River Bridge, the course crosses Sanya River West Road and continues straight on Heping Road. At Jiefang Road, Sanya’s main street, the course turns right, then left on Guangming Road and right on Sanya Bay Road. Approximately 5K into the course at the intersection with Yingbin Road, Sanya Bay Road opens up into a four-lane boulevard. The loops begin at this point.
Run Course Snap Shot: The three bridges are the only hills on this very fast, flat course. The opening 5K that traverses downtown Sanya will be lined with amazed spectators. The Sanya Bay Road loop is lined with coconut trees and cooled by the sea breeze.
FINISH
The finish is at Yalong Bay’s Central Square Monument where large crowds and cultural displays are expected to greet finishers. A free bus service on Monday will shuttle athletes to the bike-run transition area to retrieve bikes and equipment.
